Treatment of Rhodesian sleeping sickness in Kenya.
In a study of 269 sleeping sickness patients treated with Mel-B, 14 (5.2%) died during treatment. With total dosages of at least 30 ml (1.08 g), 1.4% relapsed and another 6.4% died, mostly of unknown causes, within three years of treatment, giving a success rate of 92.1% over the three years. Mel-B was used to treat 55 relapses after suramin therapy with 1.8% deaths during treatment, 3.6% relap...

Tsetse flies (Diptera: Glossinidae) are vectors for African trypanosomes (Euglenozoa: kinetoplastida), protozoan parasites that cause African trypanosomiasis in humans (HAT) and nagana in livestock. In addition to trypanosomes, two symbiotic bacteria (Wigglesworthia glossinidia and Sodalis glossinidius) and two parasitic microbes, Wolbachia and a salivary gland hypertrophy virus (SGHV), have be...

متن کاملSleeping sickness survey in Musoma district, Tanzania. II. The role of Glossina in the transmission of sleeping sickness.
A survey to determine the role of local Glossina species on the transmission of human sleeping sickness has been carried out in the Ikoma/Seronera/Kilimafedha triangle. Three different tsetse species were encountered; they were G. swyn¬ nertoni, G. pallidipes and G. brevipalpis. Out of 6,348 G. swynnertoni and 623 G. pallidipes examined not a single carried salivary gland infection. G. swynnert...

BACKGROUND Identifying hosts of blood-feeding insect vectors is crucial in understanding their role in disease transmission. Rhodesian human African trypanosomiasis (rHAT), also known as acute sleeping sickness is caused by Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense and transmitted by tsetse flies. The disease is commonly associated with wilderness areas of east and southern Africa. Such areas hold a diver...
